Sustainable Pet Foods™ offers just a few healthful foods, for dogs and cats, of all breeds, and all lifestages. (Each food is clearly distinct in terms of ingredient profile.)
There’s a message with our very limited product line: It’s about 1 Food + You™.
We want and encourage you to add foods from home, and in so doing reduce waste while maximizing the health of your pet. (According to the USDA, 30-40% of food in the United States is wasted.)
The idea that pets cannot, or should not have “human foods” is sheer absurdity fabricated by pet food companies that would like you buying and feeding only their products. Equally ridiculous is the notion that you, as a caring guardian to your pet(s), cannot decide how to add eating interest, fun, and health benefit to their diet while reducing food waste.
To further the ends of the mega pet food corporations, some sycophantic veterinarians and other pet professionals around the country promulgate the same message, effectively intimidating pet caretakers into feeding a single pet food and leaving their pet's nutrition up to those mega corporations. It’s a shameful practice, and has gone on for far too long. Not to mention, in terms of pet health, it’s definitely not working – see the statistics.
Think there’s some special nutritional magic in processed pet foods? If you practice an omnivorous diet, then there are likely scraps from your meals that could surpass and certainly augment the nutritional value of processed pet foods. Examples include:
- Scraps of meat and fat from steak, roasts, or soups
- Leftover chicken meat of all types
- Scrambled eggs
- Chicken broth
- Meat broth
- Any meats, cheeses or yogurt slightly out of date (but appear and smell fine) that would otherwise be tossed
- Meat leftovers from holiday meals like Thanksgiving (especially if a full turkey was involved)
- Raw bones, organs, and scrap meats from your local butcher
...and dozens of others (see + You). If you think like the farmer of old who wouldn't have wasted anything, you'll get the idea. (All of these, by the way, would be considered "byproducts.")
The 1 Food + You™ movement is another way in which we’re challenging the status quo and paradigms of the pet food industry. Despite what you’ve been told, you can become empowered, and you can positively direct your pet’s health destiny with a bit of logic and initiative at home.
By feeding suitable foods from home along with our diets, you’re providing your pet with healthful food and protein variety, cutting down on wasted food resources, and reducing the world’s agricultural burden. It’s the responsible path forward, and at some point will become the only path forward. It's a positive step for the environment and your pet's health. So, let’s get started.
