I'VE HEARD YOU ARE DONATING TO THOSE IN NEED, IS THIS TRUE?
It is. We're committed to being the World's Most Environmental & Philanthropic Pet Food™. See Philanthropy for more details.
WHY ARE SUSTAINABLE PET FOODS™ MORE ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECOLOGICAL?
Ecology "deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings."
The current pet food industry practice of carving out, or at least pretending to carve out an additional "human grade" food supply for domestic pets is ecologically irresponsible. It's disrespectful to the creatures already being slaughtered for human consumption, and wasteful of their full nutritional/food value.
Nature dictates that dogs and cats be fed a predominantly carnivorous diet. For dogs and cats to live long, healthful lives, and to their full genetic potential, other creatures must be sacrificed.
But our contention is that additional creatures do not have to be sacrificed to address the pet population. By tapping into the pre-existing human food industry we're working to utilize every bit of food value, and avoiding waste.
This is the natural model. When a prey creature is killed in the wild, essentially every element is consumed. We should strive to emulate that arrangement.
In so doing we're maximizing the ecological relationship between our domestic pets and their food, and simultaneously respecting the environment (physical surroundings) as well. And to the maximum extent possible, organic ingredients are used to minimize agricultural toll.

SHOULD I FEED SUSTAINABLE PET FOODS™ EXCLUSIVELY?
Food variety naturally occurs in the wild, and that approach should be emulated when it comes to feeding pets.
Sustainable Pet Foods™ are excellent "go-to" and base diets for your dog and/or cat, but suitable food variety will only benefit your pet.
We absolutely recommend utilizing leftovers and scraps from your own meals to augment the diet of your pet.
The idea that "human foods" should not be fed to pets is a myth propagated by pet food companies who want you buying and exclusively feeding their foods. And, we have to say, just slightly ironic given the current "human grade" pet food craze.
While high carbohydrate, or sugary human foods are not appropriate for pets, most households have meal leftovers and scraps that are clearly beneficial for our carnivorous pets. Examples include:
- Cut up scraps of meat and fat from a steak
- Leftover chicken meat of all types
- Scrambled eggs and breakfast meats
- Chicken broth
- Any meats slightly out of date that would otherwise be tossed
...and dozens of others. See 1 Food + You™, + You.
By incorporating these foods into your pet's feeding regimen you're keeping with the Sustainable Pet Foods™ philosophy: Maximizing existing food supply, minimizing waste, and not creating an additional agricultural burden. You're also maximizing your own financial resources.
Not to mention, providing your pet with excellent nutrition!
Also consider the wisdom and common sense of past generations. In our grandmothers' generation a fresh chicken would absolutely never have been slaughtered specifically to feed the farm dogs. Instead, with native forethought that generation always did what we should practice now: Sustainable pet feeding. The half a sausage that grew cold, the last few scrambled egg scraps were saved. At lunch and dinner time, the same. The few leftover green beans, the bruised peach half and certainly any and all bones or carcass bits from the food animals on the farm. Organs, scraps, whatever did not make it to their table went into the dogs' pot. Then, rather than throw it out, the vegetable stock or the boiled potato water was added. Nothing was wasted. If you are old enough to recall this method of feeding, you will harken back to its absolute soundness.
Are pets better off nutritionally since society has discontinued this type of resourceful, sustainable pet feeding? Since big corporate was entrusted with exclusively providing foods for pets? Of course not… For the dire pet health statistics see Beyond Bogus Pet Food Trends.

EXPLAIN WHY YOU HAVE PRODUCT FORMULAS COMMON TO BOTH DOGS AND CATS? IS THAT SOMEHOW MORE SUSTAINABLE?
First and foremost, understand that the natural canine diet and the natural feline diet are not fundamentally different. Different foods for dogs and cats are a construct of the pet food industry, which has its roots in sales, not sound nutritional principles.
And so we formulate Sustainable Pet Foods™ to be nutritionally appropriate for both cats and dogs (all breeds), and cognizant of the natural/wild diet for both creatures.
This approach to pet feeding is also more sustainable because it requires less energy through the use of one production process, and produces less waste in the form of one package, not two.
And if you happen to house both dogs and cats, it just happens to be more convenient and cost effective for you as well!

IF I CAN & SHOULD UTILIZE "HUMAN" FOODS AT HOME FOR MY PET(S), WHY FEED ANY PET FOODS?
Fair question. Indeed, many pet owners have very successfully implemented a diet that utilizes only home prepared foods, and we admire their initiative.
For many other pet owners, feeding only home prepared foods will be just too burdensome. For these caretakers, having a "base" diet is immensely helpful. It's also the case that Sustainable Pet Foods™ provide a foundation of key nutrients, including protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and other micronutrients. To achieve appropriate, balanced levels of key nutrients while utilizing only home prepared foods requires significant knowhow and research. Whereas adding to, or supplementing a pet's diet with nutritious home foods is a far easier, far more intuitive process. (See + You.)
